My idea of a pretty picture is one that I've taken myself..
BUT. within the automotive world there are a few artists that I've always appreciated.. one in particular Mr. George Trosley..

I've been a fan of the Troz since the late 80's when I began reading "Cartoon's" magazines..

When I moved to the Philadelphia area I learned that George was living nearby and from time to time I have had the oppertunity to bump into him at area events..

needless to say I've often considered having george create a little something featuring my car, but George and my Father outdid themselves.

Today I was lucky to participate in an open house at 3dog Garage in Boyertown, PA.
A friend was good enough to set up a group tour, and quite a few local hotrodders came out to see the collection. The afternoon started with lunch, where I was thankful to catch up with Neil, Kevin, and Andy.

After lunch, our group headed to the "Garage"

Obviously, the center of attention should have been "First Love"

The Ridler winning 36 Ford built by "Rad Rides By Troy"

However.. I was secretly hoping to get another look at the 1948 Ford Sportsman that the collection had previously displayed at the AACA Museum. Sadly, the Sportsman has moved to a new home..

and while the vintage Racecars, and Hot rods were really interesting.

it was this Chris Craft Cobra that kept drawing my attention all afternoon!

the annual trip to Hershey is special. because the recycled 40 ford woodie got its start in the vendor fields of Hershey..
this year, hershey had some extra charm.. as I was able to source parts for the next FEW recycled woodies..

additionally I had the chance to spot an original 40 ford wagon.. which answered quite a few pressing questions.

I accidentally caught this photo in 2007 when the owner of this very original 1940 Ford Station Wagon was good enough to let me sit inside..

of course.. this was before I knew anything about 1940 ford woodies..

as it turns out, 40 wagons used a lot of "special" parts.. rear gate handles. corner brackets, window regulator covers (which I still don't have) and perhaps the most difficult to locate.. the silly door opener handles..

according to my good friend and fellow 40 Woodie owner, Craig J. (who has had his 40 Woodie for 30+ years) he has never seen another.. (and he still needs one)

I have made it a personal mission to locate these.. I've searched for about 6 months now... off and on.. and found several somewhat less rare window winder handles along the way.

The handles shown above showed up on eBay recently.. the seller identified them as fitting something else.. but admitted that they weren't sure of their original application..

I couldn't really ask for more details, (as the auction photos were really good) rather I had to search for an original 40 Woodie handle in an original photo or car.. luckily I mistakenly taken this picture...

Mechanically the Checkered Flag Jalopy Showdown was just a mess.

Thankfully every cloud has a silver lining.. and in the end. my friend Kevin Fritz literally saved my tail.. I am eternally indebted.

As usual it was great hanging out with Tokyo, Clark, Larry, Kieth, Bill and John, Andy, Matt, Barb, Kevin and Pat and his crew of "Lopers" from New Jersey. Ultimately I Finally put a lot of faces to names, which is always good. and Mr Paxton continues to be my hero..

In the end, my long lost cousin Jason from COLUMBIA walked off with a stash of my "rarest" pontiac parts. and I broke even selling other stuff i don't need nor want.

Something just didn't feel right... Stopping distance was increased, and the brake pedal felt "soft"

Friday afternoon I did a quick tear- down to identify the issue.. As it turned out one rear brake shoe was cracked, and both passenger side shoes showed signs of glazing. At this point I am thinking that somehow I picked up a bit of debris somewhere..

Luckily new parts were "ordered" Friday night and were in my hands before 9 on saturday.. My pal Brian at NAPA is once again my hero..

My test drive saturday night included several screeching stops.. which make me very happy .

While it was fun meeting some new folks this past weekend, and making a connections for future projects was neat.. I really wanted a box of "STUFF" to root through.. so last Sunday we took off to the South Jersey AACA swap meet.

My entries in this blog are mostly about the recycled 40 ford woodie, and I try not to stray from my escapades with the car too much. However, this is cause for deviation..

a little history.. (adapted from an email sent to a long standing woodie club member and friend Phil S)

Phil..
my dad's had a 1940 chevy sedan delivery since 1973 or 1974.

its been off the road for about 10 years now.. and I am doing everything I can to help him get it back on the street so that we can travel to some events together..

while I am currently involved in the leadership of the national woodie club. Back in the 70's my father was very active in a now defunct sedan deliverys limited..

while i don't believe he was ever an "officer" he was however a very active member.. (or as active as he could be.. )

at that time.. the club was much like the woodie club with the obvious exceptions being the focus on sedan deliveries.. I believe Dick Royer was the SDL founder, and I think that he had some connection to Will Oniel, in fact dad thought that the two groups might have done a few things together..

anyhow.. not too long ago.. my father and I were talking about a car show he attended in Harleysville, PA.. that he thought was in conjunction with the nwc (and sedan delivery's limited)

apparently this was a pretty big deal to dad.. because he and my mom would have been married almost 3 years at this point, and I would have been just 2 years old when this occurred.. AND Harleysville to Williamsport (even today) isn't exactly just around the corner..

anyhow.. from conversations you (phil) and I have shared. .. i think you would have just bought your pontiac around 1977 or so? Perhaps you had some other old car and you might (given your proximity) have attended this show in harleysville?

its a long shot.. but do you know if the nwc was ever involved in this event? and is it even more (remotely possible) that you were also at this event?

lastly the contemporary historical vehicle association had a presence here.. do you know if it does today?

Wow, way to make a guy feel old. I was, in fact, at Harleysville in 1977 (bought my Pontiac in 1975) I don't remember the show being held in conjunction with any other club, though. I'll look at my pictures from the show. You'll have to excuse me, but they're what we old-timers called "prints", and you actually hold them in your hand to view them! Now I have to find them!!

I do remember the sedan delivery club, remember it well actually. They held a major show each year called "The Back Door Bivuac", and there was a connection to the NWC, probably through Will O'Neil's friendship with someone in the Sedan Delivery club, probably that guy you mentioned.

Let me look into the NWC archives that I have here to see what I can find.

By the way, I have a brand-new license plate frame from the Sedan Delivery Club here somwewhere. I'll get it to you for your dad.

of course I had to go on and forward my research to my father..

I hadn't ever been to Stowe, but "woodies" were the featured car that year..

Several members of "Penns Woods" had planned to attend.. and thank goodness I went..

the swap meet (although small) was FULL of little woodie parts. (some of which I did bring home!)

The find of the day occurred in the car show, where I found a restored 1940 Ford Woodie.

The owner, Mr. H. was good enough to allow me to take a few photos of the finer points of his car.

Few people would bother do do something like this.. BUT Thank goodness I did!

A few months ago I hatched this idea to arrange a tour to the aaca museum in Hershey.
their exhibit "ash and maple marvels" featured some of our areas finest wooden station wagons.

in the hustle yesterday, I missed several opportunities, something I don't like to do.
When I arrived home last night I realized that I hadn't taken one good photo all day.. (although I'll certainly share some of my poorly composed photos now!)

this morning, as I prepared to write this, I received a message from my good friend and Hershey native Zach Suhr. While not a Woodie owner I had invited Zach to join us, and alas I missed him..

thanks to Zach for this great shot of the recycled40fordwoodie at the aaca museum in Hershey.

the Day had begun early, Meeting my new best town and country man Mr. Miles and my Model A Woodie brother David just off the Pennsylvania pike.

Our pace to Hershey was somewhat uptempo.. and I was quite impressed with the performance of the Unrestored town and country that kept in my "draft". I wonder just how many drivers have been fooled by Mr Miles vintage "Drive Slow Pennsylvania" license plate.

David quickly developed mechanical issues.. (a cracked water neck!) but we employed the "no woodie left behind mantra" and got him through the tour.

In all a great time at the AACA fall meet..

a few things stick out..

I was able to chat with AL and got to check out his "halbrands under glass"

I bumped into Mike from Traverse City, and took some spy photos of the awesome work he does to send to Scott J.

had a great oppertunity to arrange a group visit to the AACA museum and talk to Mike B. and several other National Woodie Club Members.

Saturday morning I found the worlds cheapest 40 deluxe hood, and bought it before I headed to the show where I was finally was able to see Mr. High's Sportsman, and chat with my pal doug's grandchildren.. (whom I am sure are running around the house saying "woodie wagon" at this instant!)

Saturday night I finally met several woodie club directors with whom I have only ever spoken or emailed in the past.. hopefully I impressed upon them that technology is great!

And had the chance to give Craig J. (santa) a ride in my street rod wagon.. now I'll need to get to Arizona to see what his stocker looks like.

Sunday I spent a few minutes with Jerry W., and John L before we both departed for home..

I cant wait for next year..

I scored this hood (which is the nicest I have ever had) on saturday morning for the least I have ever paid for a hood..

after loading the hood my buddy Jason and I had a great time visiting and sharing all the great stuff he scored!

Our chat was interrupted a few times, specifically when my good fried Bob N. (and family) from Long Island stopped to tell us about their trip to Wavecrest. And when another NWC member Peter G. (whom I had only ever spoken via telephone) recognized the car and introduced himself..

It will be hard for me to miss another Saturday at Hershey!

Had a great time at 47th Das Awkscht Fescht in Macungie today, several other national Woodie club members attended with their beautiful woodies.

The Recycled 40 ford Woodie was without a doubt the "dirtiest" wagon on display!
* note to self.. being caught in a rain storm does not qualify as washing the car.

I chatted with my friend doug (noboD), for quite some time and learned about several of the cars that will be in an upcoming display at the AACA museum in September.

I've never been one to see a movie twice.. but I have a feeling I'll see the woodie display several times..

My last post mentioned that I took the long way home past the Cedar Run Inn today..

Cedar Run, PA.. lies just beside Pine Creek, a few miles southwest of Wellsboro, PA.

I have a special connection to Cedar Run, having traveled to Cedar Run with my paternal grandparents and had spent many summer weekends at their "cabin". It wasnt until today that I realized that my first camping trips were to Cedar Run.

Later in life I would return to Cedar Run several times a month to assist my maternal grandfather deliver goods for his business. I can remember bouncing along in the back of his delivery van all the way to Cedar Run. We would stop only briefly at every bar, sporting goods store, and small market to deliver packages.. Cedar Run was the last stop.. as far north as the economics of his small business would allow.

I had hoped that the Inn would be open for lunch, knowing that my wife would enjoy it.

Just behind the Inn, I noticed a early mopar coupe, and it was obvious its owner would be nearby..

I quickly realized that this 34 plymouth was a hot rod.. the owner soon mentioned that he too had a 40 ford..

Just inside the barn, under cover and currently in "project status" sat a 40 ford coupe. How ironic that we could be 100's of miles from home, in a place I remember only as a child, on a day when our travel plans werent dictated by time or a map and happen upon the very type of car that has directed my entire adult life..

saw this at a rest stop on the PA turnpike today..

YES... A parking spot for low emitting vehicles? WHAT the heck?

I dont care how efficient a new hybrid is, a new car represents an investment of time, materials, and ENERGY that is paid for NOW..

Conversely the Recycled 40 ford woodie represents similar investments made at a much lower rate some 70 years ago.

Perhaps I need my own spot..

I figured I'd work on making something to replace the old pedal..

having seen photos of vintage "gasser" pedals I thought this might be fitting..

The wood is maple and walnut.. and are Left overs from another woodworking project.. its backed up with a piece of 1/8th aluminum. I guess if it doesn't wear well, I'll just go with the aluminum..

hoping to find out how it drives with my the new pedal soon..

These are used up, new wheel bearings on Monday.

These don't look so bad
but sound terrible. That plus the leaking (suddenly) seal indicates that at least this side is bad
new parts waiting for me at "shop daves" on Monday
